Differences between 2G and 3G
One of the most important benefits of third generation networks (3G) networks to the previous generations – a much higher speed. This allows mobile operators to provide subscribers with new, previously inaccessible facilities and services – high-speed Internet access, mobile TV, video calls, etc.
Familiar to many subscribers to its GSM network belong to the telecommunications networks of the second generation (2G). They provide data transfer speeds 5,6-13 KB / sec. This standard is primarily designed for voice traffic. GPRS (General data transfer rate 56-114 KB / sec) refers to the generation of 2,5 G, and EDGE (speed up to 473.6 Kb / sec) – to the generation of 2,75 G.
Finally, a network of third-generation (3G) provide data rates up to 3.6 Mbps. Launch of 3G networks opens up mobile phone subscribers access both to a better quality of existing services, and to fundamentally new innovative services. When connecting to the Internet on 3G and switch to GSM network access to the Internet is not broken and stored in the network GSM / GPRS / EDGE.
* When testing a 3G network MTS hour maximum load, while downloading a video clip (30 MB) -12 seconds, the music file (3 MB) – 2 seconds.
* According to MForumAnalytics, the number sold in Russia mobile devices with support for 3G in 2008 reached 4.5 million level of penetration of terminals 3G, reached in Russia in 2008, 7,5% is projected MForumAnalytics, in 2011, will more than 3 times up to 25%.
The development of third generation mobile networks in the world and in Russia
The world’s first commercial 3G network was launched in October 2001 in Japan, NTT DoCoMo operator based on the standard W-CDMA. Within 4 years the number of users of mobile networks “third generation” in Japan reached 40% of the population.
First European network of third generation was launched in the UK 3 March 2003 the operator Hutchison. In Europe, the development of 3G networks has been slowed down by high fees. In total, the acquisition of 3G licenses, European operators have spent about 130 million euros. In addition, during the formation of European networks, 3G (2003-2006 gg.) Local operators are faced with the problems of slow adaptation of technology, low-speed data transmission, the lack of subscriber equipment and the lack of marketing strategies.
In Russia, the introduction of third generation communication networks based on the standard UMTS / HSPA began in 2008. This allowed for national operators to avoid the phase formation technology 3Gi immediately go to the introduction of “real” mobile broadband.
